The Shoppingtown is a regional shopping center located in the suburb of Dewitt,New York , East of Syracuse . The mall first opened as one of Syracuse's first suburban shopping centers in 1954 as an open air mall. It was enclosed in 1975 and substantially remodeled in 1991. Currently, it is mostly two stories, however only a small portion of the lower level is accessible to the public and is used for retail space. It is home to 70 stores and a 10-Screen movie theater as well as a TGI Friday's Restaurant. It is currently owned by the Macerich company out of California, having purchased it from the Wilmorite Corporation out of Rochester in 2005.It is not to be confused with "Shoppingtown" malls owned by the Westfield Corporation. Was originally located in the mall's Southwest corner which is the current Sears store before moving to near the food court in the early 90s. The space is now Kaufmann's) Bon-Ton (Closed in 2006) Chappell's (Syracuse- based chain, sold to Bon Ton in 1995) E.G. Edwards (Closed in 1975, Now JCPenney) Media Play (2-Level Location, closed in 2006) Steinbach (Key anchor in 1991 expansion,in first level of former Dey's store, now Sears) T.J.
