Lavon served in the Knesset from 1949 until 1961 and was elected leader of Histadrut in 1949 , a post in which he served until 1961 . He was also secretary of Mapai and was minister of defense from 1954 to 1955 , but left in disgrace following the so-called Lavon Affair . He retired from public life in 1964 after a long-standing discord with David Ben-Gurion .
