John (Jack) Ryder (born August 8 1889 in Collingwood , Melbourne , Victoria - died April 3 1977 in Fitzroy , Melbourne ) was an Australian Cricketer .

In a society which demands, Jack Ryder`s feat of continuing as an Australian
test cricket selector is quite remarkable Ryder was a selector in 1930 when he was Australia`s and suffered the humilation of being dropped by his two co-selecters. Then in 1946, 15 years after his retirement from the first class arena, he was given the job again . He held the post for 23 years, during which time Australias cricketers registered some of their finest peformences Ryder, nicknamed the king of collingwood , was a slow talking man this was hardly typical of his batting style. It is claimed he hit more sixes in Melbourne club games than any other batsman in history . When in1926-27 he scored 295 in four hours against NSW, Ryder smashed six towering sixs including 2 in 3 balls off his old mate Tommy Andrews. It was the most by any batsman in a first class match at the MCG and has been bettered only by Cec Peppers 7. He was out caught by Kippax when he missed 300 by five trying to be now tied wit Pepper. A great many of Ryders sixes came from drives. He was master of the drive this was particulary evident during his 201 not out this Innings included century partneships of 134 with Andrews and 108 with Oldfield, he also 88 in the second innings becoming the first to achieve the feat. Ryder played in four series against England and one against South Africa. The best was in 1921-22 he averaged more than one hundred in the series, He was also important in his last series averaging over 50. He was also a useful bowler (he took 150 wickets for Victoria and 805 in all grades) and a top fieldsman (he caught five in one English innings).
