Information About

House Of Lords Appointments Commission

The Commission has three roles:

  • vet all nominations for membership of the House Of Lords , including those nominated by the UK Political Parties , to ensure the highest standards of propriety

  • vet individuals added to honours lists by the Prime Minister for propriety

  • recommend people for appointment as non–party–political Life Peers

In March 2006 the Commission's objections to some of those proposed by Prime Minister Tony Blair for working Peerages led to the " Cash For Peerages " scandal.

The chairman is Lord Stevenson Of Coddenham . The commission has two other non-partisan members, Angela Sarkis and Felicity Huston . The three largest UK political parties are also represented, with Douglas Hurd (Lord Hurd of Westwall) for the Conservative Party , Baroness Dean Of Thornton-le-Flyde , for the Labour Party and Lord Dholakia for the Liberal Democrats .
