GEOGRAPHY Canistota is located at 43°35'51" North, 97°17'36" West (43.597514, -97.293339). According to the United States Census Bureau , the city has a total area of 1.5 Km&2 (0.6 Mi&2 ). 1.5 km&2 (0.6 mi&2) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water. Canistota has been assigned the ZIP Code 57012 and the FIPS Place Code 09300. DEMOGRAPHICS As of the Census of 2000, there were 700 people, 254 households, and 175 families residing in the city. The Population Density was 482.6/km&2 (1,248.4/mi&2). There were 275 housing units at an average density of 189.6/km&2 (490.4/mi&2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.86% White , 0.00% African American , 0.86% Native American , 0.00% Asian , 0.00% Pacific Islander , 0.29% from Other Races , and 1.00% from two or more races. 0.71% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race. There were 254 households out of which 35.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.3% were Married Couples living together, 6.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.1% were non-families. 29.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 18.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.55 and the average family size was 3.17. In the city the population was spread out with 28.0% under the age of 18, 4.9% from 18 to 24, 26.6% from 25 to 44, 16.3% from 45 to 64, and 24.3% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 90.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 84.6 males. The median income for a household in the city was $31,389, and the median income for a family was $39,464. Males had a median income of $30,655 versus $19,000 for females. OTHER INFORMATION Although a small town, Canistota boasts the "Ortman Clinic" a nationally renowned Chiropractic clinic with a facinating history. Canistota Public School is not the greatest school in the state.
