Clifton Forge was an Independent City during the 2000 census. However, in 2001 , Clifton Forge gave up its city status and reverted to a town.


GEOGRAPHY


Clifton Forge is located at 37°49'11" North, 79°49'24" West (37.819801, -79.823584).

According to the United States Census Bureau , the town has a total area of 8.0 Km&2 (3.1 Mi&2 ). None of the area is covered with water.


DEMOGRAPHICS

As of the Census of 2000, there were 4,289 people, 1,841 households, and 1,146 families residing in the town. The Population Density was 535.9/km&2 (1,387.5/mi&2). There were 2,069 housing units at an average density of 258.5/km&2 (669.3/mi&2). The racial makeup of the town was 82.96% White , 14.62% Black or African American , 0.09% Native American , 0.05% Asian , 0.00% Pacific Islander , 0.49% from Other Races , and 1.80% from two or more races. 0.89% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 1,841 households out of which 26.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.4% were Married Couples living together, 14.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 37.7% were non-families. 34.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 19.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.22 and the average family size was 2.80.

The town's age distribution is: 21.1% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 25.4% from 25 to 44, 23.2% from 45 to 64, and 23.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 43 years. For every 100 females there were 78.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 74.0 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $26,090, and the median income for a family was $31,509. Males had a median income of $27,829 versus $21,039 for females. The Per Capita Income for the town was $15,182. 19.4% of the population and 15.1% of families were below the Poverty Line . 39.4% of those under the age of 18 and 10.5% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.
