As with all national museums in Wales , admittance is free, and as well as seeing the surface buildings, you can experience travelling in a cage down the shaft. The pit was first worked in 1860, and it finally closed in 1980. The mine reopened for visitors in 1983. For background see the Wales Underground site, and for opening times, see the National Mining Museum of Wales site. Big Pit is adjacent to the Pontypool And Blaenavon Railway . |
