Information About

Arthur Mcduffie

McDuffie sold insurance, had been a United States Marine , and a military police officer. He had two daughters and planned to marry his former wife, a nurse, when the incident happened.

On December 17 , 1979 Miami-Dade police spotted him doing stunts on his motorcycle, and McDuffie, who was unarmed, led them on a high-speed chase. When he stopped, white officers beat him into a coma. When reinforcements arrived, the officers lied, saying McDuffie had been injured in a crash. Days later, he died from his beatings.

Four officers were indicted in the case, three charged with manslaughter, one charged with second-degree murder. On May 17 , 1980 an all-white jury reached a verdict that the four officers were not guilty.

A riot soon started in which eighteen people died. Property damage was estimated at $100 million.
