His father, Teodor Jonsson, also began his professional career a field engineer for the Swedish utility then called Sydsvenska Kraftaktiebolaget . In the late 1920's, he changed his surname to Björgerd. Björgerd also served as Chairman of the Board for Sydgas AB , a wholly-owned subsidiary of Sydkraft and one of Scandinavia's largest suppliers of LPG. He was also one of the original founders of Swedpower AB, Sweden's largest energy consultancy firm (now a wholly owned subsidiary of Vattenfall ). He also served as Chairman of one of the national state pension funds, 5:e AP Fonden (now 3:e AP Fonden), as well as being a member of the Advisory Board of the Swedish Energy Commission.
