Harakat Abnaa el-Balad is an Israeli Arab political organization. Its name means "Sons of the Land Movement" in Arabic It describes itself as follows: "harakat abnaa elbalad (Sons of the Land Movement) is a Palestinian Progressive Patriotic movement active within the areas that are occupied by Israel since 1948. The movement started in 1969 as part of the rising of palestinian resistance. After the mass strike and demonstrations of The Day of the Land (30.3.76) it converged from local cultural clubs and students' groups to a country-wide political movement. " {Link without Title} It was formed in 1969 , but it began to attract support after the protests around Land Day in 1976 . It has been subjected to repression by the Israeli authorities. Several of its leaders were arrested on 7 February 2004 , including its General Secretary Mohammad Kana’neh (also known as Muhammad Kannaane). As of September 2005 he is still in prison. harakat abnaa elbalad called for Palestinian citizens of Israel to boycot the the 2006 Knesset elections {Link without Title} . It did so through its affiliated organization The Popular Committee for Boycotting the Knesset Elections ( اللجنة الشعبية لمقاطعة انتخابات الكنيس). This call was rejected by most Palestinian citizens of Israel, partly through the vocal responses of the Balad and the Hadash political parties. EXTERNAL LINKS |
