Reserve, New Mexico

On December 1 , 1884 , near town (then called Frisco), deputy sheriff Elfego Baca held off a gang of 80 Texan Cowboy s who wanted to kill him for arresting cowboy Charles McCarty. The cowboys were terrorizing the area's Hispanos and Baca was working against them.

The town, which has a hotel, several stores and bars, and a health clinic, is surprisingly problem-ridden. Problems with nepotism, and illegal narcotics use, manufacturing and smuggling have become issues famous throughout the state.

GEOGRAPHY

Reserve is located at 33°42'31" North, 108°45'39" West (33.708493, -108.760822).

According to the United States Census Bureau , the village has a total area of 1.5 Km&² (0.6 Mi&² ). 1.5 km&² (0.6 mi&²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

DEMOGRAPHICS

As of the Census of 2000, there were 387 people, 177 households, and 103 families residing in the village. The Population Density was 266.8/km&² (696.2/mi&²). There were 238 housing units at an average density of 164.1/km&² (428.2/mi&²). The racial makeup of the village was 80.10% White , 0.52% African American , 0.52% Native American , 0.00% Asian , 0.00% Pacific Islander , 13.95% from Other Races , and 4.91% from two or more races. 40.57% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 177 households out of which 25.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 41.8% were Married Couples living together, 14.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 41.8% were non-families. 39.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 16.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.14 and the average family size was 2.84.

In the village the population was spread out with 24.5% under the age of 18, 7.5% from 18 to 24, 20.9% from 25 to 44, 28.2% from 45 to 64, and 18.9% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 43 years. For every 100 females there were 95.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.6 males.

The median income for a household in the village was $24,750, and the median income for a family was $30,536. Males had a median income of $30,833 versus $16,000 for females. The Per Capita Income for the village was $14,612. 17.8% of the population and 14.2% of families were below the Poverty Line . 22.6% of those under the age of 18 and 9.1% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.
