Norwich International Airport also just Norwich Airport, is an Airport about 5 km (3 miles) from the centre of the City of Norwich , Norfolk on the edge of the city's surburbs.

Along with a long history of flights to Schiphol Airport , Amsterdam via KLM Cityhopper (formerly KLM Uk ), it offers flights to various destinations in the United Kingdom and Europe . Besides the commercial flights, charter helicopters also operate out of Norwich flying crews to North Sea gas rigs.


HISTORY

The site was first devleoped in 1939 with the foundation of RAF Horsham St Faith . During World War II , B-24 Liberator s of the 319 Bomb Group of the USAAF 8th Air Force flew from the base. It was used by the Royal Air Force (RAF) from July 1945 until 1967 . The site was subsequently purchased and the airport set up jointly owned by Norwich City Council and Norfolk County Council .

The City Of Norwich Aviation Museum records the history of the site from a location on the northern edge of the airport, accessed through the village of Horsham St. Faith .


FACILITIES

NWI has two runways, one 1,842 m (6,043 ft) long (09/27), the other 1,285 m (4,215 ft)(04/22). The latter (04/22) runway has been closed due to maintenance costs, and is now serving as the 'C' (Charlie) taxiway for large aircraft ( Boeing 737 or bigger) to the (09/27) runway.
It has 9 Parking stands. The airlines currently serving are: Eastern Airways, flybe, bmi regional, Astraeus, Air Southwest and KLM Cityhopper uk.


AIRLINES AND DESTINATIONS


Recent routes operated from Norwich that have been cancelled were:
  • flyBE - Aberdeen (the planned opening of the route was cancelled when flyBE used the aircraft to increase capacity to Edinburgh after Eastern cancelled their service there.) , Belfast City

  • bmi regional - Manchester

  • Air Wales - Cardiff, Dublin


Recent contemplations by flyBE have shown that they are considering a profitable Southampton route and they have also been studying Norway, Amsterdam, and Germany.

There have been rumours that Ryanair are considering a Norwich to Dublin however as yet nothing has come of these rumours.
