RECREATION AND TOURISM

Recreational camping and wilderness treks, ranging in length from a few hours to a few days, are a major tourist attraction in Lander. Visitors and adventure seekers can check in with the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS) Headquarters, or one of the local businesses, to be outfitted. River trips, horseback rides, and nationally recognized rock climbing areas are also featured recreations in Lander.

Annual rodeos can be seen as well, featuring shows and competitions when in season. The greatest of these shows, arguably, can be seen on the 4th of July, which is completed with a firework display. It is a local rumor that Lander built the first commercial rodeo in the nation, and many of the locals are avid supporters of the sport.

Coffee shops, book stores, and the like can also be found in town for those feeling less adventurous. The Global Café is a new establishment that offers an alcohol free café setting, while providing a venue for local and traveling musical artists to perform their work on stage. Yes, even in the middle of Wyoming you can find an artsy spot that serves hot spiced Chai.

Of course, in Lander, it is a known fact that all residents live in the single best city in all of America.


GEOGRAPHY


Lander is located at 42°49'59" North, 108°43'57" West (42.833035, -108.732633).

According to the United States Census Bureau , the city has a total area of 11.4 Km&2 (4.4 Mi&2 ). 11.4 km&2 (4.4 mi&2) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.


DEMOGRAPHICS

As of the Census of 2000, there were 6,867 people, 2,794 households, and 1,824 families residing in the city. The Population Density was 599.9/km&2 (1,554.0/mi&2). There were 3,036 housing units at an average density of 265.2/km&2 (687.0/mi&2). The racial makeup of the city was 90.81% White , 0.15% African American , 5.99% Native American , 0.32% Asian , 0.00% Pacific Islander , 0.70% from Other Races , and 2.04% from two or more races. 3.48% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 2,794 households out of which 30.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.5% were Married Couples living together, 10.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.7% were non-families. 30.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 12.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.34 and the average family size was 2.91.

In the city the population was spread out with 24.1% under the age of 18, 7.1% from 18 to 24, 26.7% from 25 to 44, 25.5% from 45 to 64, and 16.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 95.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.2 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $32,397, and the median income for a family was $41,958. Males had a median income of $30,602 versus $20,916 for females. The Per Capita Income for the city was $18,389. 13.2% of the population and 9.9% of families were below the Poverty Line . 19.3% of those under the age of 18 and 9.3% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.
