The original endowment is now supplemented by the Scottish Arts Council , and the winner is chosen by the Professor of English Literature at the University Of Edinburgh .
Two prizes are awarded annually, one for Fiction and the other for Biography ; the amount for each prize is £3,000.
Only those works of fiction and biographies that were written in English, originated with a British publisher, and first published in Britain in the 12 month period prior to the submission date (30 September) are eligible for the award.
