Horrid Lorries

These lorries are all very rude to the engines and bitterly opposed to railways. Each lorry has their own numberplate:

  • Lorry 1 - LOR 1

  • Lorry 2 - LOR 2

  • Lorry 3 - LOR 3

These lorries all perform tasks faster than the engines, and claim to have taken over from "museum pieces that are too slow". But each one receives its come-uppance.

Lorry 1 reversed into the quayside and has to be fished out onto a barge.

Lorry 2 was driving carelessly along a narrow road near a cliff's edge and fell off the cliff. Luckily, his driver wasn't hurt.

Lorry 3 tried to carry an excess load of flour to prove his reliability, but his radiator overheated and broke down on a level crossing.

Thomas rightfully gave them the nickname "The Brothers Grimm - Smashed(LOR 2), Broken(LOR 3) and Sunk(LOR 1)!" The lorries were repaired but their poor start to work meant that they were sent away shortly afterward, however the lorries have been stripped of their faces and are now used as background vehicles in the series.

The Horrid Lorries are inspired by the first diesel lorries developed by the Foden Lorry Company of Sandbach in Cheshire. These lorries were first used in the 1940's to replace the older steam lorries.
