Information About ™Discoveries Of Anti-bacterial Effects Of Penicillium Moulds Before Fleming |
|
Alexander Fleming , although he discovered and identified the mould independently of the previous researchers, was not the first to discover the antibacterial properties of the Penicillium mould. Fleming was the first to suggest that the mould must have an antibacterial substance, and with help from a chemist he isolated it, and this is why he got to give it its name: Penicillin . He also kept, grew and distributed the original mould during twelve years trying to get help from any chemist that had enough skill to make a stable form of it for mass production and made intermittent investigations and clinical trials. There were many failed attempts along the way until Howard Walter Florey organized his large and very skilled biochemical research team, notable among them Ernst Boris Chain and Norman Heatley , in 1938 at Oxford to undertake the immense and innovative work that had to be done to produce a stable penicillin, which was not completely finished until 1945 .
