Allan Simonsen (born December 15 , 1952 in Copenhagen ) is a former Danish Football (soccer) player and now coach. He was named European Footballer Of The Year in 1977 . On the club level, Simonsen played for Vejle BK , Borussia Mönchengladbach , Barcelona and Charlton Athletic . When playing for Barcelona in 1982, the signing of Diego Maradona forced them to sell the popular Dane due to Spanish League restrictions on the number of foreign players allowed in each squad. He was transfer listed, and in a shock move switched to English Division 2 side Charlton for £300,000. Despite scoring seven times in 16 appearances, the club had trouble funding his wages, and he was put up for sale. Despite offers from Tottenham Hotspur and several Italian Serie A clubs he chose to return to Vejle BK . For Denmark , Simonsen was capped 56 times, scoring 21 goals. He also participated in the 1972 Summer Olympics . Allan Simonsen remains the only footballer to score in European Champions Cup , UEFA, and Cup Winners Cup Finals.
